Leveraging Social Media to Drive Customers In

You did it – you built the perfect website for your brand, no easy (or inexpensive) task, for sure. You go live with the new site and you wait for all of your followers to pile in – and you wait, and wait.

Content marketing hub, Shareaholic, found late last year that social media is now the number one driver of all website referral traffic. Given that 74 percent of online adults use social networking sites, it’s no surprise that these sites are driving website traffic, but how? Read on to learn how you can leverage some of the top social media site to drive more traffic to your website.


With 1.49 billion monthly active users, there’s no doubt that Facebook is a great place to generate website traffic from. While you can create a page for your business on Facebook, even getting users there can be a difficult task. You might try Facebook Ads to reach your target audiences and place links in those ads to ultimately drive that audience back to your website.



Still working its way toward Facebook status with 300 million active users, Instagram is rapidly growing as a place for users to share images with family and friends, but to also learn about other brands. Instagram now has advertising much like Facebook, but it tends to be used mostly by large brands. Want to get your Instagram users back to your website? First, use relevant hashtags in your posts so that new users can find and “follow” your account. Next, make sure your website url is in your bio section of your account and reference that in your comments when you post your pictures.



There are a number of options on LinkedIn to share information about your company and drive users back to your website. Make sure to fill out your company page and provide a link to your site. You can also share company news and blog posts in your status where you can provide a link to your website – users may “like” these posts, which will help them to show up in other users’ feeds as well. Your LinkedIn Showcase page, which often focuses on a particular product or customer segment, can also provide links back to your website.


Pinterest is great for companies that have product images or other compelling graphics (an infographic, for example) that users will want to explore. You can post pins with relevant descriptions and hashtags that other users will want to “re-pin.” Each of these pins can link back to your website, offering another avenue to drive traffic your way.

Since your bio is at the top of your Twitter page, make sure to fill it out completely and include a link back to your site. You can also include links to your website in some of your updates, but remember to switch up the content to include industry news so your users don’t get bombarded.


In addition to the social media platforms mentioned above, another form of social media is a company blog. While this is often an extension of your website, the blog posts can be a website traffic driver based on keywords used in blog post titles. Keep your company’s top keywords in mind when drafting blog posts, so that when users search for those keywords, they are directed to your blog, and hopefully move along to your website.

If you don't have the time to regularly blog, consider guest blogging for someone else in your industry or a community you belong to. This will get your name out there, create awareness for you and your business, and show people what you are good at and where you are knowledgeable.
